Mapping For Research & Organizing
Workshop Description:
People like maps. And for good reason, too — they put to sight information we otherwise have structured in our minds. Maps show distance, color, space, size, and weight and can be powerful tools to communicate information with non-technical audiences.
In this workshop, expect to get technical. We’ll develop a map from shapefile to image using free software QGIS and cover common pitfalls to avoid in this process. After this, we’ll talk more about programmatic map development and maintenance, including using R, Tableau, and Mapbox to generate and display static and interactive maps.
Workshop Leader:
Hanna Haddad is a data specialist at United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) with nearly a decade of experience producing data visualization and analysis using SQL, R, Tableau, and countless other software. In 2022, he mapped the Starbucks unionization effort.
Prior to working at UTLA, he worked for Democratic campaigns and progressive institutions such as Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), Warren for President, For Our Future, Catalist, and Clarity Campaign Labs. Hanna earned his Bachelors of Arts in Political Science with an emphasis in Quantitive Methodology from University of California, Berkeley.
Off the clock, you can find Hanna making ceramics, gardening, or hosting social gatherings. Originally from the Bay Area, Hanna now lives in his chosen home of Los Angeles, CA.
