Pension Funds 101
Workshop Description:
U.S. State and local government retirement funds controlled $9.36 trillion in assets at the beginning of 2024. Pension funds invest workers’ capital in all kinds of companies, sectors, and asset classes. This workshop will build basic understanding of pension governance structures, decision making, and policy initiatives. We will also delve into how to research pension fund ownership of companies and give examples of engagement opportunities and strategies.
Workshop Leader:
Meredith Schafer has been a researcher and strategic campaigner active in capital strategies work since 2012. She is currently the Strategic Research Director at United Teachers Los Angeles.
Nick Cohen is a research specialist with United Teachers Los Angeles. Nick received his PhD in history from UC Santa Barbara in 2024. Prior to graduate school, Nick was a researcher with the Sacramento City Teachers Association.
